In the summer of 2009, Justin was asked to design a flier for the annual Black August concert, which was assembled and sponsored by The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. Justin was essentially given the artistic license to go where he wanted to in regards to the poster’s content; he decided to re-create a festive gathering of people united together in a musical and spiritual release, and juxtaposed a vinyl record in the background to symbolize the power music has in any and all cultural and social movements. Featured in the center of the record are the images of Assata Shakur, former Black Panther and member of the Black Liberation Army (BLA), and martryed Black Panther member George Jackson, who was assassinated in 1971. The 2009 Black August event was held at the BB Kings venue in Manhattan, and drew performances from a vast array of politically and socially conscious hip hop acts inluding Sadat X, Hasan Salaam, Rebel Diaz, and A-Alikes.
